The historic Secunderabad Railway Station is undergoing major redevelopment, leading to the phased demolition of its iconic British-era buildings. As part of modernization efforts, authorities have begun dismantling the main entrance porch, a structure that has stood for nearly 150 years.
Originally inaugurated in 1874 under the Nizam’s rule, the Secunderabad Railway Station has undergone multiple upgrades, including a major renovation in 1950. Now, the central government is executing an extensive redevelopment project under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model, with an estimated budget of Rs 653 crore.
The plan envisions the railway station transforming into a high-tech, airport-style transit hub. The South Central Railway (SCR) has issued tenders for the project, which aims to enhance passenger experience by integrating state-of-the-art facilities.
Over 500 trains pass through Secunderabad daily, with lakhs of passengers using its 10 platforms. The redevelopment includes improved transportation connectivity, modern amenities, and seamless metro integration. A skyway will link metro stations on the east and west sides, allowing passengers to directly access the metro from the train platforms via escalators.
A key highlight of the project is a new multi-story building to be constructed on the north side, covering 22,516 square meters. Additionally, the south side will see an expansion of 14,792 square meters. A two-story sky concourse, spanning 108 meters, will be built, with the first level dedicated to passenger movement and the second functioning as a rooftop plaza.
For the first time, platforms will be fully covered under a single structure, with tracks running below the newly constructed building. The station’s layout will integrate modern urban mobility solutions, including elevators, escalators, digital display systems, and enhanced road connectivity.
The redevelopment project prioritizes passenger convenience with new drop-off and pick-up zones, improved traffic circulation, and designated pedestrian pathways. On the north side, a five-level multi-modal parking facility will be introduced, while an underground parking area will be developed on the south side. Two pedestrian walkways will link major buildings for seamless connectivity.
In line with sustainability goals, a 5,000 kVP solar power plant will be installed to support the station’s energy needs. The modernized infrastructure is expected to improve passenger flow and reduce congestion while preserving the station’s operational efficiency.
